Winners of our prestigious Studio Partner of the Year award, KF Kitchens, are a Plymouth-based Studio Partner, dedicated to creating amazing living spaces for their customers. Owners, Nathan, Derinda and Simon make up a highly-knowledgeable team that pride themselves on delivering honesty, patience, guidance and spectacular results. In this case study, we see exactly how they achieved this with Sarah and Richard’s home in Cornwall.
When Sarah and Richard bought their house in 2016, they wanted to create a large downstairs living space to make the most of the stunning view outside, overlooking the golf course at St Mellion, Cornwall. The existing living space consisted of two small, dark rooms that didn’t open up the area to the beautiful views outside. These rooms also didn’t offer the living space that the couple wanted to enjoy time in, with their two sons.
After KF Kitchens were recommended by Richard’s colleagues, Sarah and Richard approached the Plymouth-based Studio Partner, who suggested knocking down two walls to create one larger open living space. This provided the opportunity for a single window to stretch across almost the length of the room, immediately creating a stunning wash of light, and an area that could serve as much more than just a place for cooking.
Sarah and Richard approached KF Kitchens with an initial outline of what they were looking for in terms of design. After 2 hours in discussion with Nathan and Derinda, this outline had transformed into an illustration that optimised the space efficiently, made the most of the views, and worked around Sarah and Richard’s lifestyle.
Sarah and Richard had already researched the style of kitchen they preferred and were keen on a dark grey colour scheme. However, when the KF Kitchens team suggested a lighter shade of grey might complement the newly brightened kitchen space, Sarah and Richard were convinced, and very happy with when it came to fruition.
And it wasn’t just design elements such as colour scheme that Sarah and Richard were happy to receive advice on – it was the finer details too. Sarah explained how Nathan was really good with the minutiae, suggesting that appliances that are used for longer periods of time, such as the hob, should be fitted closer to the windows to enable the family to enjoy the view for longer whilst cooking. With specific and well-thought-out advice from Nathan, Sarah and Richard were able to create a living space based completely around their individual needs, space and light.
The couple chose a kitchen from Burbidge Kew range – a range that offered a sharper, fresher take on the traditional shaker style. The luxury painted finish accentuates the design of the Kew door design, revealing a unique patterning of the solid ash framing.
When it came to installation, Sarah and Richard were able to relax knowing that they were in safe hands with KF Kitchen’s fully-managed service. The couple explained how they had had an experience at a previous property where managing the project and dealing with various firms had become very stressful – something they wished to avoid with their new kitchen. KF Kitchens managed everything from the plumbers and electricians to painters and decorators.
The project was completed in June 2018, just in time to make the most of the summer sun beaming through the window. The new kitchen had completely transformed Sarah and Richard’s living space, providing them with the perfect place to socialise with friends and spend time with family.
